Of those injuries, many involve multiple injuries and, in many cases, various catastrophic injuries. Many injuries involve severe trauma to the brain and spine. Some of the most common injuries include, but are not limited to, closed head injuries, hemorrhagic or ischemic strokes, subdural hematomas, epidural hematomas, bone fractures, intracranial hematomas, and diffuse axonal injuries.
While some of these injuries can be treated successfully using presently available surgical or medical techniques, a growing number of victims of these accidents suffer from severe and life threatening injuries that currently go untreated. In many cases, these injuries can only be treated by emergency surgical procedures. However, emergency surgical procedures can be too dangerous or ineffectual to permit a patient to survive. Accordingly, various medical devices have been developed to perform emergency surgery when standard surgical procedures are too dangerous or ineffective.
One example of such a device is a catheter having a steerable tip. In emergency procedures, the tip of a catheter may be steered to a location near a patient's skull so that a surgeon can drill a hole through the skull for the catheter and insert the catheter through the hole into the brain of the patient. The surgeon can then perform emergency surgery to remove a hematoma or other brain mass and to relieve pressure in the brain.
Catheters generally include an elongate, flexible shaft having a steerable tip that is attached to the distal end of the shaft. The catheter is inserted through a hole in a patient's skin, using a stiffening wire inserted into the catheter as a guide. Once the catheter is in position, the surgeon must then steer the tip of the catheter toward the patient's skull, and may have to drill a hole in the patient's skull to permit the catheter to be inserted.
Catheters and other medical devices are often employed in emergency situations wherein precise control over the device is often needed in order to steer the device to a desired location. For example, in catheterization procedures, the tip of the cat
